Recycling process and economic impact of recyclable steel

Types of recyclable steel: steel vs. stainless steel :

The difference between steel and stainless steel is its magnetic properties. Steel itself is highly magnetic, while only certain types of stainless steel are magnetic. This is because steel is a ferrous metal, which means it contains iron (making it ferromagnetic), whereas stainless steel must contain iron, and the crystal structure of the alloy must be martensitic or ferritic to be magnetic.

Steel recycling process :

Scrap is collected by the scrap mill in person, at a designated recycling station or buy-back center, sorted and sent to the mill or foundry. The excess scrap is then melted in a furnace at a temperature close to 3,000 degrees and purified to remove any contaminants from the scrap. The molten steel is then solidified into sheets and ready for transportation. The newly recycled metal is then prepared to be sent to various factories to be used as raw materials, and then the cycle begins.

The economic impact of steel recycling :

When using recycled materials for production, manufacturers significantly reduce production costs. Steel allows the use of completely reusable materials without having to go through the expensive procedure of extracting raw ore from the ground. According to the American Iron and Steel Institute, the steel industry's recycling process also leads to job creation – scrap recycling creates more than 531,000 jobs and generates more than $110 billion in economic activity.
